Follow the Flocks for Fall Bird Migration

Follow the Flocks for Fall Bird Migration In-Person

Experience the wonder of fall bird migration! Join Meredith Barges of Onondaga Audubon and Lights Out Central New York for a fascinating look at the incredible journeys migratory birds undertake through Central New York each autumn. Discover which birds pass through our region, where they're headed as they travel south, and why this seasonal movement is so critical for their survival. Learn how changing daylight, cooling temperatures, and dwindling food sources signal it's time to go—and how these factors shape the timing of fall migration. The presentation will also highlight the challenges birds face during migration and share practical steps we can take at home and work to help them travel safely to their wintering grounds.

Meredith Barges is a bird-friendly building researcher and chair of Lights Out Central New York. She helps people to appreciate the complex lives of birds and how our decisions about buildings, landscaping, and nighttime lighting affect bird populations. Lights Out Central New York is a nonprofit advocacy campaign of the Onondaga Audubon Society that raises awareness about the hazards of light pollution for migrating birds.
